Isn't the Mustang Saleen SVT supercharged? I believe it is. Anyway, Saleen hypes up that car to be the sh*t. I saw a report that was trying to verify Saleens claim on performance. Saleen said mid to low 12 in quarter and the article could only best a mid to low 13 quarter in the car. That is still pretty fast for you n/a motor. But why not include turbo's in your ULTIMATE Z's? You do 0-60 in 5.5, my old turbo Z was doing it in about 4.0 and my new motor should be sub 4.0, (3.6-3.8). Maybe we can meet on the road someday, you can tell me what the back of my car looks like. Hehehe!

Ok I have a question for ya, what do you do for a living that you can afford all this crap? I was under the impression you were a college student or something to that effect.

Zebra, that's really not a lot to spend on basic transport. consider the prices of new or newer cars. that's reason enough to put 8k - 10k in a Z. you are still way ahead.

Some of the Saleens did come supercharged. THere were severial diffrent Saleen models. Living here in The Dallas/Ft. Metroplex, I have the opurtunity to see a few of these exotics at the street races, when the big boys come out to play, in the wee hours of the morning.

Some of the Saleens, came with a 351, rated in the 350hp range. Some of the Convertable Saleens came charged, rated in the 500hp range. Some of Hardtop Saleens came charged to ****, full cage, no heat, no a/c, stiff power steering, and few of the luxury options. These cars were upward of 600hp, tuned from the dealers you had them delievered to.

The latter of these cars, was of course the fastest. Even the lowly 350hp Saleen, could run 12's. The top charged verion, I have seen, with my own eyes, at the Enis Speedway, run low 11's. There is no way that this guys Z beet any of these cars, under good racing conditions. Even an inexperienced driver could waste on of us, in these cars. I ran a '95 Cobra, with a Charger on, and I lost, bad. The motor was built to SVT Saleen specs. The Cobra was 300lbs heavier than any of the Saleens, and he had an absolutly unGodly 60 foot time. He layed down a high 12, on street tires.

I have a 3.1 motor. Not too far off from what our friend who started this post. I like top brag about having one of the fastest Z's in North Texas. But even with my big head, I know which cars are too fast to play with. And the Saleens are one of them. Seeing the cars up close is an ominious site, and seeing them run, you get the accurate picture of how much power they really have.

It's jusy hard for me to believe that some one beat one of these cars. I can understand coming close, but unless this guy is running a low 13 second, high 12 second Z car, I would have to see it beat the Saleen to believe it.

so you said that you had $8000 invested and ran 5.5seconds 0-60. that i have a problem with because i have $2000 invested in my 76 and i can do 0-60 in 7 seconds so what your saying is for another $6000 i can drop a second and a half of my time? sorry but i think you spent a little too much.

Agreed, but then you can usually finance a new car, whereas financing parts for an old car is kinda tough (unless you like buttloads of credit card debt, which I don't)

Maybe it was a Saleen Explorer. Heheheh. Seriously though, it was probably a regular mustang with some Saleen body kit parts on it or something. I agree there's probably not a normally aspirated L-6 powered street driveable Z in the world that'll beat a real Saleen. A high strung turbo, or a well built V-8 that can actually get the power to the ground could possibly do it, but no way in **** is a N/A L-6 gonna do it.

Re: Maybe the Saleen had flat tires:)N/C

I got a thing in the mail last year that had the specs of tons of cars and they had a 95? it was the first year they made the 4.6L. it was a Saleen Mustang Super Charged with tons of mods and it had a top end of 180MPH and a better 0-60 time then a Viper now thats one fast pony
it was made only to race so I don't think we would see that on the streets
I whould love for a Z to beat that car because then I could brag about my car=)

11 second n/a Z

Actually, Don Potter has claim to have built several 350+hp n/a L-28 motors and had one run in the 11's in a sub 2000lb 240z. I don't doubt the ability of his engine building techniques, he did build a 1000hp L-28 turbo detuned to a more sedate 650-700hp in race trim. He told me the unibody just couldn't take the abuse.

Zebra, I didn't know you did impressions! Hehehe. Anyway, when I graduated with my BS I was hired as a Quality Engineering at NASA for the ISS. At the same time getting my Masters at U of H. So working full time making Bank as an engineer and paying $250/month rent+bills I had a ton of money to throw into my Z. Over $14K in the last 1.5 years. After wrecking my Z in November, I received $6500 from the insurance and bought it back for $1500 with engine and goodies mostly intact. I sunk another $3400 into the old engine and new car; race cam, bigshaft 60-1 turbo, external wastegate, custom intake manifold, raceprepped rods, new total seal rings, ARP bolts/studs, 16 gallon fuel cell, roll cage, and a few other goodies for power increase. To answer your question I am in school. I am a Ph.D. student and researcher in the college of engineering at Florida State University. And that is how I afford all that CRAP!

Actually I do a pretty mean impression of a horse with stripes.

And when I say crap I do mean only the best crap.

Sounds like it's time for some more network certifications for me then. (Maybe I should ditch the wife too now that I think about it....)

Sounds like a very nice car, I am looking to do some suspension work on my car and noticed you lowered your car 4 inches. I haven't measured my car but four inches seems like a lot...How did you correct for bump steer?

Thanks Chuck

Hey I can see it possible but unlikely that you beat a Saleen but it is possible. If your engine has been built fromt he ground up and has every little mod besides turbo you might have enough HP to beat a Saleen. **** Even I got a weird story:
My 73 240 no Mods except SU's with performance stuff in them Don't even have K&N's with the crappy Automatic Took on a 83 Camaro with a brand New rebuilt Engine with a blower on it and Won. Understand this guys Car Run's like **** because a day after he got his car from the shop witht he new engine he is out racing it and tearing **** up. When I raced him his tires peeled and his car sputtered and acted like it was going to die then it just started to limp after me and when he finally got to 3rd gear he was moving but I had gotten so far away he didn't have enough room to catch me so go figure. Even a l24 can beat a V8 350 w/blower.

>Thanks for the info on the saleen maybe you were right but he sure was pissed off. to answer a few questions.. I work for a large chemical co. I'm 28... I founded Ontario Z Car.. I almost put in a turbo but decided to sell my 300 turbo doner to a friend in desperate need of a motor. I never bothered after that because I would probably really go horse power nuts and reliable turbo set ups are hard to get up here and very expensive. my motor will not get dyno tested until spring but it is estimated at over 300 horse and is guaranteed safe to 8500rpm (it sounds great at that speed!) the fastest n/a street Z up here does a 1/4 mile in 14.00 and I can beat him. lastly a n/a L28 really pisses off v8 freaks when I beat them. OH and on highway drags I took down an older Pantera, an early 90's porsche 911 and a 90's tt300zx. and as a further side note my mechanic also built 240 gt1 race car that holds the track record at Mosport for a under 3L n/a.
I welcome more comments and ideas.. thanks!

Well when it comes to handling my knowledge is very limited. All I have done is chopped and reformed the springs 5 or 6 coils (can't remember) put in tokio iluminas some urethane bushings steering rack bushings and a NHL hockey puck to replace the steering rubber donut, tower braces and triangulating supports in the engine bay shed about 200 lbs in weight spoilers and a nice wing. The car handles very well as I occasionally autocross it and take it out at Mosport and Shannonville road circuts when my club rents the tracks. I have had professional drivers drive the car and they tell me the car handle fairly neutral though they recommend quicker steering add ons which I might get done this season. It isn't the best handling z around but these projects take time.
