Shift to formard then reverse if you here a clunk
its problably the drive shift...

Most of the Time it Pays to replace all 6 on the 71 or 2 in the drive shaft first.. if you drop you shaft you tear up the yoke.. cheap spiders are 10 bucks good quality are 30 and up.

With the parking brake engaged,
reach your arm under the car
and try to rotate the driveshaft and/or
halfshafts(driveaxles).Any movement
coming from the spider joints indicates
worn u-joints. Any movement coming
from the rear of the transmission or the
front of the differential is ok as long as the
play is very minimal. You will need a hydraulic
press remove the u-jounts.
But you can get the parts at PEP BOYS.
Spend the extra $30 and get the heavy duty
u-jounts.
let us know how everything went GEO79zx

HI Mike one thing to check out is the 4 bolts that hold the drive line on, I had a 71 that would lossen up the bolts no matter what kind or what stuff I put on them, IT would start to viberate out of know where and I would have to tighten them every 2000 miles or so.good luck
