TRANNY SWAP

Ive got a 76 with a four speed. My synchros in third gear are shot and im looking to put a 5 speed in it. Ive read articles about 81 and later ZX five speeds and their gear ratios and i think thats what i want. Does anyone know if i will have to change the drive shaft to put one of those in? And what about a 280 five speed?

thanks,

Mike B.

It Works

Mike,
I have a '77 and have done exactly what you are contemplating. If you opt for a ZX 5-spd then you need to be sure of two things:
1) Get the transmission from the 81-83ZX only. It has a .745:1 5th gear. The '80 model has a .777:1 and the 77-79 have a .864:1.
2) Install the 3.90:1 differential at the same time. The ZX transmissions have lower, numerically, 1st & 2nd gears so you'll come off the line at slug speed if you keep your stock 3.545:1 differential.
They bolt right up, no modifications needed.
I love my set-up. Gives the car a whole new personality.

Hey Phantom!

Hey Phantom,
I am looking into getting a drivetrain from an 81 ZX and putting it in my 77. Is the rearend from the 81 a 3.9? I forgot.
