I have a freshly rebuilt L24, ZX distributor, MSD Digital ignition, MSD coil. Been trying for days to sort the timing out.

Bypassed my MSD Digital ignition and voila! It revs! Found that my timing was retarded by about 20 degrees. No wonder it wouldn't go. Don't know how or why the MSD box is screwing up the timing so bad but I'm not impressed. This is the second straight unit that hasn't worked for me.

Anyway, with the MSD box bypassed, set the initial timing to about 15 degrees and while I could mash the gas in the lower revs and feel some torque, it would backfire terribly at high revs. So I backed the timing down a few degrees, took it for a test drive and the backfire subsided somewhat. Backed the timing down several more times taking it for a test drive after each adjustment. I'm now timed at about 5-7 degrees. The back firing has subsided to nothing more than a slight miss, but there is also noticeably less get up and go. Also, this amount of initial advance seems pretty low to me. I'm suspecting the vacuum and/or the mechanical advance but it's a brand new distributor.

I'm as certain as can be that the carbs are mixed and balanced properly, but I'll recheck that tomorrow just to be sure.

I would have tinkered some more this evening, but the girlfriend hasn't seen me since last Saturday...if she only knew the sacrifice I'm making to go out with her tonight!
