Sorry I didn't get back to you before your message dissappeared...

...I'm having the same problem especially with the exhaust smell in my car. I have all new rubber being that I just restored the car. I even had my body man use this special machine that detects any leaks in the inside of the car.
It showed that my hatch is totally sealed yet I still get a god awfull amunt
of exhaust in the car (with windows open). Any other Ideas?...

make sure your exhaust is directed beyond the rear bumper (into the slipstream of your car). You should also check your tail light seals. Pull the carpet in the cargo area and check for leaks above the muffler and tailpipe.

Hopefully your exhaust system is solid and doesn't leak anywhere between the header gasket and the exhaust tip.

Thanks for the response:
my tailight gaskets are new plus I sealed them with silicone so I dont think they are leaking. I tried using an exhaust extension to get those fumes out but it didnt help. My cargo area also seems to be sealed but Ill have to check that again, as well as the exhaust system.

From what I have read, with the windows rolled down you will always get that smell. It's the vacum that the shape of the rear end creates. The only fix I've heard of is a rear spoiler or wing, also giving a slight amount of downforce.

I owned a '76 280 new. I dont remember it ever having a nexhaust smell. There must be some way to get rid of it before I go totally braindead.(Cant ride with the windows up all of the time)
