I just installed a new motor in my 78 280. It started up fine, Ran fair at 1800 - 2000 rpm to break in the cam. Brought the idle down to adjust the timing but i can't get anything lower than 12 - 14 degrees advanced timing. Is it possible to be off a tooth on the distributor? I followed the book on aligning the oil pump with the distributor. Any suggestions? Thanks

Yes, it is entirely possible to be off a tooth. Mine was. BTW, the car really comes to life when timed properly.......

Thanks for the responces I now know what the problem is, I'm just trying to get it done.
I have had this oil pump out about 12 times. Either 12 to 14 degrees advanced is the lowest or 2 to 3 degrees is the highest I Can get, depending which tooth I get the oil pump on. Am I missing something?
Thanks Again!
