How many miles does a Timing Chain last. I
have a '76 280z that my dad had since '76,
he gave it to me for my birthday, so I done
want to screw up the engine at all. The last
time I checked it had 197 thousand and
something miles on it. He keeps perfect
records on it but I have not looked in the records to see if the chain was ever done before. Any help would be a very big help.

They last a good long time. Typically the life of the engine between rebuilds. The timing chain can, however, stretch. It would be a good idea to replace it during a rebuild of a high-mileage motor, say if you want to get another 250k miles on the motor without it stretching beyond reasonable limits perhaps. And metal does fatigue, theoretically,...

I don't remember ever hearing of one breaking, although it could happen ( frankly, a LOT can happen to a motor, although it doesn't happen very often to the L-series. )

This is not like a timing BELT, which is an entirely different story, typically.

On your Z, you have much more important things to worry about, I'm happy to point out.
