Heres you advice... go buy a factory service manual instead! I doubt your fuel pump is the problem, after all you said the car runs rich... I dont believe a fuel pump will cause that symptom. What causes a car to run rich is bad cylinder head temp sensor, bad egr, corroded wiring, ect.
Here is where you can get the FSM... www.zcarcreation.com
Dyment 1-800-247-5321. (dyment has photocopys of the fsm... quality is good, will need 400+ page protectors and a few large binders to hold everything).
Or EBAY.
Don't waste your time with the Haynes or Chiltons... both are not worth a toss.
In the FSM's engine fuel section you will find all the tests and trouleshooting charts. Hey the choice is yours... spend $90+ for a part that wont fix the problem or $70 on the book that will show you where to look and fix the problem.

well it's not just that the car runs rich... but from what I've read on the forum:

problems starting and the buzzing sound are signs of a bad fuel pump.
Also... those with a zx were runninh rich cus the fuel pressure was too high.

so... thanks for your advice and trying to sell me something ... but that's not exactly the advise I was looking for......

In anycase, I dont want an FSM for this car cus I'm not keeping this piece of junk.
I just want it to take me to work.
I dont need a FSM for a car I dont want.
I only bought this car so I can have something to take me to work.
I bought it out of need.
(the undercarrige is rusted horribly as well as the engine bay... ack not worth investing in while I have other things to worry about)

I'm concentrating on a turbo zx and a 240... but not this......

anyway... anyone else want to give it a try?

Well since I am "selling something"... I can sell you a fuel pump for your hoopty It sure looks like you are ready to buy any part!
Do a archive search... 79280zx and JohnH240 have posted plenty of info on fuel pressure tests. You may have to buy a fuel pressure gauge, unless you know someone with one. Anyhoo, with out the test procedures, you are pissing up a rope...
I would suggest you do the archive search, test the fuel pump, fuel pressure, clean and check the cylinder head temp sensor and then if you feel froggy, buy that **** pump.

you a little paranoid about commercialism???? as for as not wanting to buy a fsm, go to the public library, that's where i got mine.free. then you can find out if you really need that $100 fuel pump. it's sad that you don't like the z, it's just a mule to you, why are you so worried about fixing it right? you could probably rig up something with duct-tape really cheap since the car is crap to you anyways.

On my 78 the LOUD buzzing uas caused by plugged intak screen at the inlet end of fuel pump. Don't know if ZX pump is the same ?

The 78 has a screen under the neoprem fitting on fuel pump, I cleaned it twice in two weeks, then relined the tank.

Take pickup line from tank off
at pump, look for screen bilt in pump, & blow air backwards to tank.

When tank is close to empty look at condution of inside of tank through axcess plate in top of tank where fuelguage & maby pickup & return lines are. My 78 has only FG in plate with pickup & return lines welded in tank at anouther lacation.
The axces plate in floor of ZXs hatch is much larger then the 78 so I am assuming the pickup / return & guage are in same area.

Don't spend $$$ on new pump yet, the relining cost about $30 for kit.

buy a new fuel pump? you gotta be kidding me.. those nissan oem units are stalwarts. the little interior cone filter is probably jsut packed with goodies from your most lieky rusty fuel tank.. id say get your gastank boiled before you buy a new fuelpump. probalby just needs a good cleaning.. if it is really going bad go get another one from the junkyard and clean it. the kraken/napa replacement parts are POS's and once they get rust in them theres no coming back. i just love how they crimp them shut

after my fuel pump "died" and i discovered that the nissan dealership wanted $400 for a new one, i took it apart, cleaned it out with carb cleaner, cleaned the screen and put it back together. it was full of varnish and other crap. no wonder it didn't work. hooked it up to some 12V power and with a good sharp whack on the garage floor, it was working as good as new.
