The cause could be the throw out bearing or the pilot bearing however the latter is brass so unless it has been damaged somehow I would concentrate on the throw out. The bearing contrary to popular belief does turn, but it is not loaded so any problems would not be as evident. The hydralic mechanize does NOT pull the bearing off of the forks of the clutch pressure plate so there is some contact, in fact if the bearing is badly worn and hard to turn it can wear the forks due to fricton of the bearing on the forks. This as you can imagine it can get really ugly really quick. Pull the trans and inspect for any slop in the fork throw out combo and all the forks on the pressure plate. Any wear can cause problems. A few years back this happened to me, wear on the forks of the pressure plate, only 2-2.5mm or so and the clutch would not release completely at full pedal deflection.
