Switchbox under my dash ??

Even though I've had my '76 for about three years I still run across stuff the previous owner installed. This one in particular I have no idea. I've noticed it before, but never got around to identifying the thing. Suggestions gratefully accepted, hehe.

This is a 3" square black box installed under the driver's side on the firewall (between the accel pedal and brake pedal). There are 3 DIP switches installed on it and four configurations printed on it labeled: "4-cylinder automatic," "4-cylinder manual," "6-8 cylinder automatic," and "6-8 cylinder manual." The switches are set in the 6-8 manual config. There are three sets of pin connectors, one of which is connected and runs off into the wiring harness somewhere. Any suggestions on what this is?

Sounds like a tachometer thing to me as well.
Sounds like something to control your ignition... maybe aftermarket ignition or security alarm. I am shooting for aftermarket ignition...

My vote is some type of Cruise control device.
