Hiya peeps.

On one of my many neverending searches again... 280zx antennas.

$150 US from Nissan US (inc postage to Australia) is equiv to $300 Aust, or 5 tanks of petrol.

Around $80 US on ebay...

Now, the news.

I rang around the wreckers (of course, not local ones as they haven't seen a Z in their life) today, and one just had a 280zx come in the other day. The guy checked, and it has an antenna, but it's mast is broken. He's going to check its motor out for me and let me know.

Question - how easy is it to put a new mast on? I have one from my 81 (motor seized). Is it a problem? Was trying to check it out. The nylon cord looks like the only problem.

Also, what would you consider a fair price for an antenna minus mast?

Cheers

Heya Travis

Have you thought of trying an aftermarket one? I just did the same thing on my 83 and used an Aerpro brand aftermarket power antenna cost bout $75 (so if you want one thats 20 years old and minus a mast I wouldn't pay more than $15). They sell them at places like autobarn or even supercheap auto. I used the semi-automatic version so I could still use the factory radio's antenna switch. All I needed to do was remove the mounting bracket from the original antenna and put it on the new one, and put on a longer drain tube. (F-ing around with wiring also) Works fine. I think the brand maybe a bit dodgy but will see how it goes, only a month or so old at the moment.
The plastic thingo in my original antenna is what was wrong with mine too.
Good luck

In all my zs I have always replaced the antenna with the power antenna that K-mart and Wal-Mart sell.
They look the same and cost around 40.00.

And if you know a little about electricity you can connect your original switch to it in five minutes.

Yea aftermarket antennas are fine but they dont half mast (go up half the way as well as full extention) they only go up full extertion and if you a driver that likes to fly low if you know what I mean you bend the antenna back at high ( warp speed ) that some of us have tendencies to side to. That is why the switch an the radio faceplate has the has two positions half and full. Gerrand nissan in NY can get new antennas for the 280ZX but it's for a clarion radio not for the hitachi the only difference that I see is that they were offered in a 2+2 and no the coupe so you have to also buy the antenna not and the trim tha goes under the nut.
New Antenna $100.12 shipped to San Diego and $2.44 for the nut and trim/gasket from local dealer w/Z-club discount.
Gerrand Nissan also offers 20% off on internet orders.

An Aussie! :)
Yeah, tried a "fully auto" from Kmart or Bigw. It burnt out.
I want to go stock, partly for Nazi reasons (**** nonNissan parts... taking jobs away...) partly cos as stbarnyard says, it allows for half mast.

As for swapping masts... I had a closer look at the one from the 81, and have no concerns now. There is a little tiny screw hidden by muck, which releases the nylon cord. So then it will slip out and allow you to remove the mast from the motor - and reattach it to the new one.

Cheers

Like I said...
Rewire... The antenna so your switch will work.

I have done many.
They all will stop at the half way or 3/4 up point.

You just have to use your imagination.
Not your wallet.

Oz my friend:
"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain"

You need to place a real antenna in that car.
Anyone that tells you different needs to be beaten with a stick.
I shall return with my stick...brb...
