suggestion on cold air intake

I have decided to replace the stock intake(Old and Busted) on my 79 N/A with a cold air setup, if for no other reason than to clean up the front end of the car, and hopefully unrestrict the breathing. This is where I turn to you guys, do you have any input on what the current best brand is? Do they make a setup specifically for a ZX, and if not, what fits?

I like the APEXi PowerFilter, but can't find them except for on Ebay.

I put the M.S.A setup on my 78, bolts right on with no problems and it has a K&N filter which is reuseable with their so called "million mile warranty". It also makes a nice swooshy sound.
I just bought a 3" 90 degree mandrel bend from jcwhitney and stuck a knn filter on it. Costed around 50 dollars with all the shipping factored in and works excellently
Nitr0x is that 3" ID, or OD?
No clue lol, but the point of my post wasnt directions to make your own it was suggesting that you can build your own for cheaper and it will be just as effective. Use whatever size piping is easiest for you

well, I know it's 3".....I just don't know if it's inner or outer diameter.
3" outer i believe. I can't imagine paying MSA's "grab your ankles" prices for such a simple diy mod.
Build your own. Much cheaper.

then get an Apexi power intake filter to stick on the end. Its a dry type so you don't have to keep oiling it and the oil damaging your AFM. And you'll get a similar increase in horsepower compared to K&N.

Dose team green make a good filter to go on the end like an extreem filter?
yeah i've researched green team filters. Seems they are pretty good. They are oil type like K&Ns.
i simply removed my stock air intake, and bolted a little pod filter on the end, picked it up for $30AU ($20?US) at autobarn. I dont see why people would need to get custom pipes made up on a ZX, my filter fits perfect
I may just get a filter and make a heat trap of some sort to put on there what size filter did you use Nitro?
Oil from an air filter isn't going to damage a gate type AFM, it's the hot wire types you read about having this problem.

BTW the factory air box -is- a "cold air intake", look at where it pulls air from. Unless you have a ported intake with a big TB, those cold air intakes aren't going to make any power, although the extra noise will make you think it's faster!
I cut away the sides of the stock air filter box and fabricated a metal plate to cap the top of the filter, bolting onto the stock base plate.

You're saying that box around the intake doesnt restrict the airflow AT ALL?
I've seen dynos when this is added not add alot of HP but enough for me to do so
get the apexi power filter here
So, for people that have done the DIY mod:

Do you connect the 90 degree bent pipe directly to the AFM, or do you use the stock rubber elbow that connects to the AFM? It seems that if you connected directly to the AFM, the bend would have to be less than 90 degrees since the AFM is already angled where it's mounted.

something like that...i have a slightly different setup now, maybe i'll take a pic later.

I did it mostly for the weight savings and a cleaner look.
