Was wondering if anyone could help me identify the source of it .It occurs when i am letting off the gas pedel around 2700 rpm to shift or just to coast. The noise sounds something like a vibrating heat sheild or something loose because it only last for a couple seconds as the rpms drop and goes away when i get back on the throttle. It seems to go away when the engine warms up after five miles or so.the car is a 78 with a 5 speed and 140,000 miles .The noise is pretty loud and makes me nervous that it could be something major so any help would be great thanks.

Is it kind of a tinny rattling sound? It may be part of your tailpipe heat shield right at the fron hanger for the muffler. There are a couple components there that will rattle like a big dog if they are a little bit out of place. I fixed mine by bending it with a pair of vice-grips.
Phantom.
