Starter relay wire behind ignition switch

Trying to wire a second switch from behind my ignition switch, for my 81 280zx.
I found the connector behind it, and through a diagram another user made determined the yellow wire was for the starter relay.
So when i took 2 wires and a switch to wire it in, it didn’t start. Its just a switch so polarity shouldn’t matter. And when i put the two wires back together, the car starts up fine.

so my question is, why is it when i wired the switch, it doesnt work, but when the switch isnt there, it does???
Thanks!

Have you used an OHM meter to check to see if the switch is opening and closing the internal contacts. Bad switch? Thanks for the year.
What was the color of the other wire?
