Hey guys,

I got a 280zxt 81 and is having problems with the speedo. Is it true that if you take the guage off, look at the cable, and if the inner cable is turning along with the wheels the cable and the gearing are o.k. T/F?

Will a 79' speedo (120mph) work on a 81 (80mph)? I have both and on the 79' the speedo has less wires (2 less).

Plugged the 70' speedo in and nothing. Rpm's started not to work right. What am I doing wrong? Maybe I'll just go back to 81' stock. What do yall think?

Re: Speedometer Update & Question...Help!!!!!!

I would assume the cable and gearing are ok if they are turning with wheels.
A 79 speedo will work in an 81. I put a 79 in my 83 about 5 years ago. You also need to get the water temperature sending unit off the 79 so the temp gauge doesnt act up. You can just tape off the extra wires. One may be for cruise control. Cant remember how to make it work again from what others have said to do. I never did bother with it cause I dont care to use cruise on that car.

Re: Speedometer Update & Question...Help!!!!!!

Some 79 speedo don't have the speed sensor and the speed sensor is used by the cruise control system. If your 79 meter doesn't have the sensor that could explain why you don't the 2 wires... In either case it should plug right in and work. You don't need the temp. sensor.. The 83s need it because some of them has the digital dash and those car have different water temp. sensor. I suggest you to check your speedometer pinion and the cable. Maybe the cable got crush somewhere. Take the cable out and plug it into your 79 speedo and then attach a drill at the other end and turn the cable and see your speed go up...if this works then check your speedo pinion that plug into the trans.. Good luck

Re: Speedometer Update & Question...Help!!!!!!

Speed-I have a '79 speedo in my '81zxt. I simply used the speed control and trip odometer from my '81 with the body and mechanism from the '79. Took a little messing around but it works fine.
A tip- before you pull the needle from the '79, mark where the needle is (it isn't pointing directly at 0) so you can put it back in the same place (don't ask).

Re: Speedometer Update & Question...Help!!!!!!

Hey guys,

got a 81 280zxt and is having speedo problems and RPM problems.

When pulling out the speedometer, should the needle be pointing toward a certain # or what? Does it matter? There's a copper colored circle piece in the rear of it which has a metal catching piece on it that prevents the needle from passing a certain point on the guage (80 mph). Is Callibration needed? What is the proceedure?

My RPM Guage started to trip out! I took all that sh*t apart and now the thing won't work. All it has is a plug in to it. The dang needle fell off somewhere too. Didn't have a clue that it disapeared! Is there a special trick to this ? Is Callibration needed? What is the proceedure?

Any help would be appreciated!!!thanks
