Hello all,
I just got some new pioneer 5 1/4 speakers and was wondering if anyone
has tried to cut holes in they're zx door panels to fit speakers of this size
in there. Did they fit alright, anything special I need to do to make them work.
I'd like to keep the factory speakers where they're at and add extra sound.

P.S. I'm also putting a new CD player in place of the original I know I
Need to get a new face plate, But I wanted to know, Is it a pain in the rear
Do I need to run new speaker wire from orig. speakers to aftermarket radio
Also if I disconnect the front middle speaker can I run the voice system off
of another speaker. (speaker is blown and sounds like crap!)

the voice speaker will still work. make sure before you cut that you are not cutting any wires you may even want to take off the panel measure a good place for the speakers make sure that on the door its self there isnt realy anything in the way and the copy the shape to the panel and cut (measure twice cut once). installing the cd player wont be that hard. motorsports and i think victoria british both should sell a new face plate and for some years a wiring kit. i did mine from scratch and it looks great. if you know any basics about wiring you probably could install it your self or just goto a local auto sound shop and it should run about 30 bucks to get it installed if its more then its not worth it.

I installed a Sony CD receiver, a new automatic antenna, speakers and a speaker box in my '82 280ZX coupe over the weekend. The entire process took about 18 hours. Because I wanted the installation to look professional, I removed the seats and pulled up the carpet to run new wires and the antenna cable. 10 feet of antenna cable was needed.

There were 4 small hang ups: 1. A new dash face plate had to be installed of course; 2. Since the old automatic antenna activation switch is part of the original radio, a new automatic antenna with an internal switch was required; 3. The new antenna has a bit wider winder mechanism than the original, so its mast tilts inward slightly when it's extended due to the fact that it's attached to a slanted spar in the rear fender; and 4. Unlike the original antenna, the new one stays up while the CD player is in use because the Sony stereo is unitized instead of modular.

The installation isn't hard but it's time-consuming, and I sure wouldn't trust a stereo shop to do it if you want it to turn out looking and sounding right. As for speakers in the doors, I don't recommend it unless you count on reupholstering both panels. The natural location for door speakers in an '82 is right where the map pocket is located, and sticking a speaker over that will look pretty ratty.

Take off the door trims speakers will fit in the top fron on both left and right However they need to be shallow speakers otherwise the windows will not work and you will have trouble closing the doors. Be sure to check alignment before cutting holes use a cardboard templet of your trim to get it right.
