hey when i got my car i noticed that it had an audio system already in it. i know nothing about audio and sterio stuff.. all i know is that the headunit is a pioneer unit, and the speakers (the ones in the front for panels) are from lightning audio. the guy cut the plastic and carpet in the panel so that the speaker was exposed, since it was a yellow speaker I thought it looked goofy, like a ricer car or somethin. i decided to take it out. it looked like a total moran wired it underneath, he didnt use any solder - he just twisted the wire around the terminals. and i think he used about 50 feet of electrical tape on there. on that note, i decided to get some new speakers. my question is, what size do I need? i went to walmart to see what they were liek and found some nice pioneer ones, 5 1/2 inches i think, is this the right size? also, how many watts or whatever do I need? i think this is determined by the headunit, i looked in the car and there was no manual for it! sorry, but i know nothing about this stuff, im into the mechanics more.. thanks

6.5" in the door, 6.5" in the rear. If you want higher quality units than Lightning Audio, and plain ol Pioneer, steer clear of Wal Mart, that's more than likely where he got those.

Get a decent 45x4 or 50x4 head until and some nice speakers from the local car audio store.

I've had Pioneer 6.5" 3-ways in my doors for over a year now and no complaints. I believe they ran me $80 for the pair? They handle the power of a 45x4 head unit very nicely with no distortion at normal listening levels.

It depends on what you want. If you just want to hear your music Pioneer's work great. They look good, fairly priced, and last forever. However if you're a musical connesieur (sp) then you'll probably want to go with some Infinity, JL Audio, Kenwood Xcellon, something like that. And if you are a REAL badass, then get some MB Quart pre-Fosgate buyout. Those are about the highest quality speakers known to man. With MB 6x9s in the back of my 97 Eclipse I had, I was hearing things on the cd that NO other speaker had played. Little things like extra noise from hi-hats on drum kits and stuff like that.

Its nothing wrong with pioneer if you get good ones. If you want to take the cheap way out go to wal mart and get the 6.5 4-ways.( only $69.00 a pair) They sound great and have a high peak power. If you have the extra cash buy a nice amp from the pawn shop or off ebay and hook the speakers to the amp. Your system will hit with clear highs and lows.

Yes, they are 6.5" speakers all around. The best way to go would be a pair of Infinity or Polk. Infinity will carry more mids and highs, not much bass response. The Polk run a lower frequency response and you will hear more low end with them, they will still carry a good mid and high range not as noticable as the Infinity, but can be adjusted with the headunit. I would not buy pioneer or sony speakers, they dont hold up as well, distortion at higher levels, and do not use a butyl rubber surround like Polk or Infinity. Definately run new speaker wire. 16 or 14 gauge is good. Also a lot of times speakers will be listed with a high peak power, but check the RMS rating on them and also the DB sensitivity a 90+ sensitivity is good, it doesnt require as much power to move the spider and cone to create sound.

ok thanks for the inout, i ran by best buy today before work and looked around.. i found some nice pionner 3 ways, 80$ I think.. they did not ahve many speakers there to choose from. and i do really want a nice system. i never drive withought music on.. ill check out the polk and infinities. im getting a paycheck for 500$ at the end of this week so i can splurge.. ill check out an amp to. i just dont want it to be exposed (i hate the look of those led, see thru bs amps and crazy speakers). as far as the thicker guage wire, ill see if the previous owner installed that too. it didnt look factory and i cant check now because my car is at the shop. ill keep shoppin around with the new advice, thanks

Check out the rear speaker board at www.zspecialties.com or look at the ad in the classifieds. There the same as the ones in the msa catalogue but they're cheaper to us zcar.com users. The sound coming out of those boards is awesome, just be sure to get the best speakers that you can afford.

For the record Sony Xplod audio gear is junk; dont touch them with a 20ft pole if you can help it... I wouldnt be shopping at Walmart either for audio gear, goto a proper car audio specialist. Just my opinion...

Cant go wrong with the following brands aslong as u buy the top of the line model speakers/woofers/amps...

Pioneer
Clarion/Pro Audio
Alpine
Kenwood
Rockford

You get what u pay for with car audio gear, buy cheap stuff you'll get cheap sound; simple as that really.

Got rid of my Inifnity Reference Series.. Too shrill on the high end. Went with MB Quart and was extremely satisfied.
Had good luck with Wal Mart Pioneers being pushed by an external amp. Wouldn't want to push them with just a head unit. Maybe that's the key?
Like 85zx said, you get what you pay for. I'd like to add one too. Garbage in equals garbage out.
