I have an 82' zx, n/a. I start it up and when the motors cold it seems to run very rich. It smokes black, and sputters when you step on it, but if youre easy on it it will rev smooth, and all the way up. When the car heats up it runs fine, no smoke or anything. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Thanks in advance...

WELL, gee I duno mike ( i know him ) think he coulda over reved his motor from going from 5 to 1st. ? changing the oil once in a great while is good, (instead of every 10 thousand miles or when it starts runin funny ? think its bad that he puts either in every time he starts it up would not help, the guy is crazy he wants to do either induction, instead of nitrous. He thinks he can rig a can of either infront of his intake and have a sting run from the can to the pedel and it will shoot a only when full throttle, yes hes crazy, ( wonder why his licence is gona) also dude, youv had your licence gone for so long im shure the gas is now thick guuuuuuu !! well I forgot you said you car was perfect !!! oh also you know why his 82 na with 175k miles on it is better then my car ? cause my 280zxt with 20k miles has a brown interior so he thinks his is better ?!?! can you beleive this guy (HES OUT OF CONTROL)

when your driving do you ever notice a puff of black smoke inbetween shifts?

only when the motor is cold, once it warms up it runs fine. no sputtering, no smoke, no nothing...

My Z does the same thing, I have the brown 82 with TAN interior power everything..... It only does it when its been sitting for a while like two or more days. oil sometimes seeps into the exhaust. If your Z isn't leaking oil you should be allright. I have 197500 miles on mine, its drivin hard from phoenix san diego then to boise idaho everyother month...

yeah, mines got 180000 on it, its a nice car, just dont know why it smokes...

Dude clearly you need: a new motor and new hubcaps !! duh
oh p.s YOUR RINGS ARE SHOT !!! do a few more 5 th to 1st gear shifts maybe that would solve that for yah.
