I've got a L28-N42 engine in a '72 240, and it has a smog
pump in the engine compartment. (But it's not hooked up,
since CA laws don't require smog checks for that year anymore).

The engine still has all the air lines going all over the top of it...
I think they're really ugly, (plus they're not doing anything), so
I plan on removing them.

My question is, if that engine was originally designed with
all that smog equipment on it, does it have a smog camshaft
inside? Will removing the smog equipment from the engine
make it run bad because of this?

Thank you thank you thank you

ive got an L28 with an N47 in a 71Z. the smog pump has been stripped out as well as all those ugly hoses. after pulling the hoses remove the nozzles and replace them with caps. its hard to find metric caps at the auto stores so just go to a yard and grab them off some used engines. truthfully though, my car isnt running any worse without the pump but then again i dont notice any difference in performance either. it just makes the engine look alot more attractive. =) i say go for it...=) but if the smog patrol asks i didnt say that =P
