simple valve question

278 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  JT240Z
Hi, is it as easy as it sounds. Do I just go to the local Pick and Pull and get some valves from a later model like a P90 from a 81 ZX and bring them with my E88 head to a head shop and say do a valve job using these valves? My E88 head is off of my 72 240. Got my F54 block with flattop pistons and felpro gasket kit and am ready to put combo back together.
O one more thing, will my 4 speed transmission bolt right up to the F54 block?
Thanks,

If you're looking to retro fit an E88 head with the larger valves then you're almost right. You need the valves from a N42 or N47(from a Z). The valves from the latter model P90 and P79's have a shorter valve stem hight and won't work. The machine shop will also have to install larger valve seats. Make sure you let the shop know that your increasing the valve size and they need to install the larger 280 valve seats.

As for the transmission, yes the 4-speed will bolt straight up with the F54 block. Keep in mind that the 5-speed is better for perfomance and easily found in most yards.

I hope this helps.
the valve lenght changed through out the years along with the valvesize good luck
Thanks for the info. Now, I have to add to that then. Do I pull the seats too from the same N42 or N47 head, how will i do that, and aren't they pressed in? Will I need a special tool or just get new ones?
You'll need to install new steal seats. The old seats can not be transfered to the other head. The cost of a seat is minimal ~$2.50 each. The machine work will cost about $12.00 each seat to do.
