I am thinking about putting sidepipes on my 80zx. Does anyone know if anyone makes a sidepipe exhaust setup for the z's. Also if I were too make my own or get some made would a straight pipe with no restrictions damage my exhaust valve or my turbo. If so should I put a cat or muffler in there. thanks.

I have never seen a 280ZX w/side pipes, but I'm sure it could be done. Side pipes would not be as efficient as a 3" exhaust(you said your car was turbocharged) run straight out the back through a turbo resonator. Side pipes might cause you to lose some hp.

bends

Lots of bends will be made in your exhaust.

From the headers you need 2 90 deg bends, then 2 more 90 deg bends to the side pipes.

It will lower your car a lot, and I can almost bet that you will scrape on some stuff.

I agre with Tyson on higth, the frame rail you need to go under is onle 6-8in. off ground.
I don't agre on loss of power, no room for cat or muffler if exet in frount of wheels & two 2+in. pipes are larger.
With turbo & 8ft. pipe valves should be ok.
Don't know about noise, on farm tracters, a turbo no muffler the same as na with muffler.

I have seen a z with sidepipes and i thought it looked kinda cool that way, they had done the front airdam and had side pipes that were about the same thikness as the sideskirts would have been and it looked clean. I dont remeber where the pic was posted, here or on hybridz.org ill look and see if i can find it for ya.

yep, his are tight, real cobra style pipes with a glasspack inside of them. Bad thing is he catches them on every bump. He has rewelded them a few times. They do look and sound cool though!

few more pics, maybe you can track down the people that own the cars and ask them where they got em and how they like em. http://www.72zcar.50megs.com/photo.html

Also some discution on hybrid z about maybe cutting away the outer rocker panel and putting the side pipes in that location, not sure if it has been done but maybe and option for more clearence

I considered doing sidepipes, but the clearance and lotsa bends problems kept me from doing it. If you're dead set on doing it, I suggest cutting the rocker panel along the line you see when the doors are closed and also at the bottom, a few cm up from the pinchweld. Invert it before welding it back on so that it is concave, rather than the original convex configuration. The pipes will fit nicely into the concave hollow. This would give you a tighter look and also save time over hand-fabricating a panel to fit.
