Ok my friend and I were in the Z last night and I let him drive it, he went way too easy on it. He was being timid cause he didnt want to mess anything up, so when I got back in the seat and we were going to the freeway on ramp I decided to let her go. Well once i was done having fun and about at freeway speeds I Shifted to third and after i let go of the shifter and it was in gear. It started to grind, and the throttle kept going despite the fact that I gave it no gas. Anyways I stuck the clutch in and went to 4th. Now while the shaft only falls out of 3rd it's real loose and you can wiggle it about 1 inch from side to side. It made it home ok... I suspect it just needs a new bushing, or am I way off? What are the other more frightening and expensive posibilities? I'll not have time to work on it until next weekend.

Thanks,
Brent

I could not tell from your post if the trans will still shift or is stuck in 3rd?If it's still in 3rd and won't come out you broke a roll pin that holds the shifting fork together.I've also seen lots of broken shift forks, but the only way to tell is to pull it apart and check. Before you do that you might check the plastic bushing at the base of the shifter. If this is broken it can cause some of the syptoms you describe.New ones are avalible from Nissan, but at the same time you will want to have the pivot hole bored and new bronze bushings installed since the stick gets all wallowed out and allows play.

I made up a new bush the other day out of a high carboin content plastic, all the play is now gone and it shifts alot easier, just turned it down and drilled it out it was alot cheaper to do than buying a new one, if you go the time and tools just make a new bush for the pivot pin (sounds like thats what your prob is) and you 'll not only save money but also you can spend more time working on you Z
