I'm getting a roll cage for my '71 240 and I was wondering what other people's experiences have been with them. Is it better to have one custom made or mail order? What are some problem areas that the cage interferes with, i.e. dead pedal, vents, etc.? What is the best size tubing to use?
Thanks for any help.

Unless you are going to be racing quite a bit, a full roll cage is very intrusive. It is already hard to get in and out of a lowered Z, and with the side bars and such, it becomes very very difficult. I've been in some Z's with full cages, and it was very cramped. I wouldn't suggest this for a street car, get a roll bar instead. It allows the installation of 4 point seat belts and extinguisher if you want one. I'm planning on getting one before I start racing this car in the summer. But, it is still a dual purpose car, hence the roll bar and not full cage. Most cages are 1 5/8 tubing. Custom is definetely the best way to go, and costs around $60 per point around here. So, for a 4 point roll bar, its about $240. It's cheaper than mail order from what I've seen. Besides, you can get something that you're sure will fit.

I got my roll bar at S&W Race Cars for $149.95, and right now they are on sale for $109.95. It's an 8 point roll bar, but I didn't use the side bars. ( no room to get in and out ). You can buy a swing out side bars though. The part number for a 240Z is
