About 6 months ago, I installed a junkyard 5 speed in my 1977 280Z (previously a 4 speed). The transmission appeared to be very low milage... extremely clean and still had the factory inspection sticker on the bell housing. The transmission is perfect....tight, like new. However, after installation, I noticed that the reverse lights are on constantly when the ignition is on. I unscrewed the plug in the side of the transmission and the lights went out. The switch is OK. A gyno-like digital exam of the plug hole reveals a metal bar directly beneath the reverse light swith. Apparently, this bar slides under the button of the switch to turn on the reverse lights when the shifter is placed in reverse.. Problem is, the bar is permanently under the switch. It doesn't move when the shifter moves.

Am I wrong in my assessment of the problem. If so, does anyone have any suggestions on fixing this without pulling and disassembling the transmission?

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

Don
