i have a 81 280ZX and i'm starting or currently working on replacing my stock speakers,i was curious for any of you that have done this before

1. Are the front speakers size 3 1/2 and the back ones 5 1/2?

2. What kind of speakers are the best?Anyone want to recommend any thats are pretty cheap but are good?

3. By best i mean i plan on keeping my original 8 track player.. i mean my original stock stereo because i wanna keep my car as original as possible. So do you guys recommend i get a whole new entire radio and tape player, or have any of you kept the old one:)?

4. Is there easier way of installing the speakers without pulling the whole dash off? i unscrewed everything to the glove box but can't quite pull it out looks like i have to pull off the whole thing like 40 more screws to unscrew

well thats all the question i can think off
thanks for your helps you guys and

The fronts are 4 inches and the rear are 5 1/4's. You pretty much have to take the whole dash apart to get the center speaker out. You can still keep you old radio (in your garage or something) and get a new radio. Motorsport sells plates for normal DIN radios. Hope that helps

Crutchfield is the source here. They have a
special black matte finished plate that looks
great. I think it costs around 6 bucks. The
drawback is that it bolts to the front plate of
the original radio, so if you want to keep it for
later installation, find one at a junkyard. The
finished project looks outstanding. Crutchfield will also send you connector adapters so you don't have to cut up your Zcar wiring.
I have some Pioneer component speakers in my Z.
The external tweeter gives plenty of choices in
best placement for highs. $99
I also have a Sony high power receiver, nothing
extraordinary $169. Sounds great.

Here's what I did:

I also replaced the factory stereo. Used a universal type mounting kit I got at the local parts store. Easily installed and soounds so much better then the stock one. I don't smoke so I used the ashtray slot to put a eq in. Gave up on getting to the factory dash speakers, ended up disconnecting them (except the voice box wires)

Well, any speaker will sound good as long as you have the power to run it. With that in mind, if you want to keep the original stereo, buy speakers that are very efficient. I have no idea but that eight track probably pumps out like 50 watts max.
And you can always buy an amp to play your music louder, and you can also buy better speakers.
So ask your local representative for a good quality efficient speaker.
If you buy an amp, make sure it has you don't have to plug it into the stereo because the stereo wont have the preamp outputs.

Aftermarket Stereo 75 280z

Does anybody know of catalogs that sell aftermarket stereos. Other than crutchfield. So many people say that it is expensive I was wondering if there were any more magazines out there. Also anybody put an aftermarket CD player in a 280z I know you would have to cut it up I'm just looking for suggetions. Sam 75 280z

JC Whitney always has some good deals if you aren't looking for top of the line quality.

Crutchfield is not that expensive...... I had to cut a bit out of my console to put in a Sony am/fm cd player but can always pick up a junkyard console to get back to original.. Took about 15 minutes to get the old radio hole enlarged and the fit and finish are great. I am running the 2 sets of preamp outputs to a 4 way 75 watt/channel amp and will add front tweeters soon. Sounds good..

I have a 77 280. I recently did the whole stereo. I did just what was suggested previously. I cut out the console to fit a Sony in dash CD and AM/FM unit( I got a nice extra console from the junkyard to put back to original). I put two Nakamichi amps one under each seat. One was 40 watts/channel four channel amp. The other is 75/channel and I used it to power two nakamichi subwoofers that i cut into the rear deck platform(got an extra one of those from the yard also). The fout channel amp I connected to a pair of Quart two way 5 1/2 speakers in the rear deck and put 4 on either side of the console along with tweeters that hang under the dash. It kicks ass. Obviously you can use any combination of amps and speakers but if you dont get decent ones it will sound like crap. I happen to collect all of my amps and speakers over a ten year period so it didn't hurt as much.

I have an Eclipse HIgh Power CD player... Love it.. it is only 12 watts total power, but do not mistake it!!! it soulds louder and clearer than anything! It is Very HIGH Amps. I had a kenwoon 40watt x 4 in my ford bronco II and the 3 watts x 4 eclipse sounds WAY BETTER. Eclipse right now is the world leader in Automotive Stereos...

I dont know the dash speaker size off hand, I want to replace mine, but its a big job... I believe them to be 4 but unsure... look in your owners manual, or in your haynes manual, they both should tell you...
