Ive got a 72 240, and am planning on replacing the stock exhaust manifold with a header. its an original california car and i was wondering about removing that smog stuff, like the air pump and hoses that go along with it. can i just take that stuff off? any shared experience from someone whos done this would help.

depending on which county in calif u live, you will have a smog inspection
every 2 yrs or only when car is sold. high smog areas its every 2 yrs
of course. smog pumps freeze up if they are not used. you can try putting it in
a sealed contains and wd40 the heck out of it.

im not too sure what the cutoff for being exempt from smog inspection
72 may be exempt already.

Hi Brain944t.
Good suggestions from bakachan. You may also want to purchase a really good single blade hacksaw if you are installing your new header yourself. The old exhaust manifold will have the tell-tail metal air breathers going into the exhaust head port openings. And its a good bet these metal fittings are corroder as all heck. Cutting them to a 1/4inch to only a 1/2inch size will present no problems such as backfiring . Your new headers also may have or may not have these air metal breathers. Goodluck. shane-
