i am assuming the system has refrigerant in it...what should i do before i start breaking open the system?

I would not do that! The system is under a lot of pressure and you do not want to remove the high/low pressure lines while the pressure is still in the system. Look at the condenser. You will see 2 lines that run from it. Follow those lines until you see a plastic cap. There will be two of these, one on each line. Take a small pick and press down on the needle inside the valve. This will relieve the pressure. Keep doing this until the pressure is gone. Then you can take the a/c lines off.

yellow slicktop is for sale. only 84k miles, but has a salvage title. it has been fully registered by 2 prior owners with no problem. the accident it was in caused some left rear quarter damage. going to sell it here soon for about $2900 or so.
