This is for my 81 zxt..This engine that the wrecker sold me was a piece or crap, I Don't know if they are going to give me aother engine or fix the timing chain for me. If it turns out that they can fix it, I still have to put a new ring gear in. Can I do this without lifting the engine? I think that I should be able too, as long as when I put the tranny back in, the torque conv. lines up with the oil pump. Also is there any way to tighten the timing chain without taking the front cover off? One side of my chain is really tight, and the other side is really loose ( hitting the side of the cover, sounds like a screwdriver handle hitting metal). Is there any way to remedy this? Thanks,

Well in my 240z i put the trans in with the engine all ready in the car, and it sounds as if you need a timing set, what your hearing is the resut of a missing chain tensioner, and while your in there save some trouble and do it all at once.

Good luck-evan

You can drop the tranny with no problem. You should use a 3in or 4in block to support the engine against the firewall so you don't over- strain the front engine mounts.

Definitely sounds as though you should replace both the chain and tensioner.

If you are hearing chain noise,
that means the plastic chain guide(s)
are broken. The pieces probably fell
streight down into the oil pan. As for
the chain hitting the inside of the
Timing cover, check inside to see if
there any grooves from the chain.
Grooves indicate metal particles
in your oil that could possibly
scratch your main and rod bearings.
I would take the engine back to
your vendor,it sounds like you got
a nightmare on you hands.
