I have the 4-speed out and the FSM says not to turn it up on the back end (drive shaft end) because fluid may run out. Is this normal or a sign of a rear seal that needs replacing?

The rear seal closes against the drive shaft. Without the driveshaft in place the oil will run out if the tranny is upended.

You should replace the seal any time you change trannys or driveshafts to keep it from leaking -- they are cheap and worth the effort
