Hi all,

I have an '81 ZX 2+2 and the rear diff is starting to whine again. I changed the fluid a couple times before and the drain plug had a lot of fine metal **** on it. I was wondering, is it time to replace it, or can I just keep changing the gear oil.

Also, what type of gear oil do you run? I've been using a Valvoline synthetic blend 80-90W I think...I couldn't find straight 80W.

Thanks in advance.

I've been pretty happy using 85W-140. Chev Delo.

Lately, my diffy started whining also. 250k miles. Can't complain too much. Maybe change the oil & look for metal. Also have a spare used one handy.

Rebuilding diffys not for the ill-equipped or faint of heart. Pretty tricky. Not cheap when done by competent shop either, I would suspect..

Good luck! I'm there too!

Mine all have...

Sta-Lube straight 140wt or Redline Shockproof.
