I have a 1976 280 with AC that has the old r-12 system. The question is what are my options to get it working again. Try to find a way to service the r-12 or upgrade to r-134a. I am not sure the condition of the current system I am assuming there is a leak because when I bought it the AC system was not working.

Pretty much no one will service R-12 systems anymore, and the stuff is expensive so you don't want to just put it in and have it leak out. Your best bet is to convert to R-134a. The conversion is really basic, just change the fittings, put the system under vacuum for an hour, put in 2oz ester oil jump the compressor and add the refrigerant. Of course you won't know until you do whether your compressor is actually in working order or if there's a leak somewhere else. Sure is nice having defrost in these cars if you want to drive them anytime other than summer.
