Quieting noisy belts

Someone told me to spray WD40 on my noisy belts... that sounds like I would be trying to add to any slippage. Was he correct? Wouldn't belt dressing be better?

The grooves on the belts look OK and the tension seems right (1/2 inch on the PS and about 1/4 inch on the alt). I know that the final answer is to replace the belts, but I was just wondering if he was in left field when he recommended WD40?

Thanx

Take them off and clean the V in the pulleys. You can also scuff the sides of the belt with 220 grit sandpaper.
NO on the wd40. belt dressing helps. try john coffey suggestion. 1/2 inch deflection seems a bit loose. I'd say you are too loose. never had much of a problem on the s130. on the other hand a z31 seems to need to be tight enough to pluck middle C with it.
Agreed with everything above .When you have them off, spin and wiggle the pulleys and make sure it's the belts making the noise.
Check the belt numbers to make sure you have the proper width belt.Too narrow and it will always be noisy. If they are properly sized and the pulleys are lined up correctly, you shouldn't have any issues.
I usually remove the pullleys, regrease and paint. That helps. WD-40 and belt dressing will leave crap all over you eng compartment, that's ok if you are not a neat freak. I use a bar of soap...just don't get your fingers caught in the belt or fan.
