What exactly does the AFM do and how important is it?

Also I just changed my alternator, and the belts squeal now would that be from them being to tight or too loose??

thanks you guys.

The Afm measures the amount of air entering the intake, and temperature of the air, and feeds this information to the ECM to help control Fuel mixture. The car won't run correctly when they go bad. t

Like Shreegs said, the AFM is very important to the fuel injection system. When I changed my alternator my belts squealed too. I found that they were to loose. I just pulled mine as tight as I could get them and they have been fine ever since.
