I found a 82 ZX motore with 175 psi compression in all cylinders at a junkyard. It has the p79 head. They want $450 for it. Sounds like a great deal. My motor is running about 120 psi compression and has the N42 head. Any conversion stuff I need to be aware of? How much trouble will it be to put the 82 in? I've done engine swaps on old pickups and such.

I just put an 81 in 78z with no problem. The head temperature sensor is on the oposite side of the head from the wiring harness and that means you'll have to extend the wires to reach it. But everything else is simple and virtually the same.

Question for Rusty

I'm curious about this swap, too, as the ZX motors used all sorts of different sensors (02), the injector cooling fan, etc. Did you swap the '78 manifolds to the '81 engine and use the '76 'brain'? Did you use the 02 sensor? What exactly did you keep, swap or bypass to make this swap work? Thanks

Mr. Zcoyote,

I just put an 82 ZX motor into a 77 2+2. The only problem I ran into was trying to use the 82 trans mount on the 5 Speed (82 5 speed trans). The 82 trans mount acutally shoves the motor about 3/4" forward on the mounts. To correct this, use the transmission mount off of your 76 transmission. Both auto and 4 speed were in same mounting location, and used the same mount. Save the N42 head, it is good trading stock. Your 76 should of had an N47 head, unless the motor is from a later car, a 77 or 78 I would guess. Your 76 may have been a late model with the N42 head?
