I'm about to transplant a turbo from an 83 turbo parts car that i bought. I was weondering if its possible to put the power steering from the 83 into my '77. Howw much of a hassle would it be. Im still having a shimmy in my steering wheel an thought this may help. I would also make the car a lot easier to drive.
Thanks

I am not sure about the swap but something to think about....If you go with the power steering you will have to switch your pulley to a 3 row pulley. This is like adding 3-5 lbs on the flywheel. If you want preformance do not do it but if you just want to lay back an cruse...just do it...haha-Good luck..and post what you find out.-Travis 77z

I would stay with the manual steering. It would be easier to drive in parking lots or manuviering(sp?) in tight places with power steering, but you loose the feel of a sports car. I would love to convert my car to manual steering. That is just my opinion though... Anyone know how hard converting to manual steering in a ZX would be?? Or how to go about doing it? Did any of the ZX cars come with manual steering?

Re: manual steering in a ZX?

Uh yeah, manual steering would be awesome in
my ZX. Some people want power steering because
they think they're missing out on something.
I think doug dawson would know the most info
on converting power to manual but I think that
he didn't get too far. He hasn't visited these
boards lately because he's busy but you can
probably find his email in the archives.

Just find a 280ZX with manual steering and put it in yours. It should be too hard to find one, everyone I've seen in the wrecking yards have manual steering. The rack and pinion is a lot better than the power steering in my opinion.

Do you think it's really that simple, a bolt
on?

My 1980 280ZX has power steering, but the factory shop manual has repair instructions for both conventional power and manual rack and pinion so they certainly, made both. I would think that they both mounted to the same bolts, but on has a poser steering pump.

Hey Guys!!
all you zx guys want manual steering in your zx.How about my original question, Putting the 83zxt power steering into my 77 280. My understanding is that the 83 turbo had power rack and pinion not recirculating ball. anyway I think the car drives nice with the power and since like many others I have been struggling with steering wheel vibration problems I thought this may be a nice touch.

Nissan has always been good about using the same bolt pattern on many different models. Examples, all diffs R160-R200 can be bolted into a car that came stock with a R series diff, it doesn't even have to be a Zcar. Trans swaps, struts, motors, rack and pinions, the list goes on and on. I have never seen a company where the parts from one model interchanged to another sooo easy.
When you change to the manual steering be sure to get all the parts from the firewall down.

Re: Power steering in a Z?

SEVERAL YEARS AGO, I RECEIVED A FLYER
FROM MOTORSPORTS AUTO ANNOUNCING THAT THEY WERE WORKING ON A POWER
STEERING KIT FOR LATE 280Z'S. I CALLED AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE HAVING TROUBLE GETTING CLEARANCE FOR A V8 CONVERSION. IN ANY CASE THEY THOUGHT IT WOULD BE AVAILABLE SOON, I'D LIKE SOME POWERSTEERING IN MY Z'S. HAS ANYONE HEARD ANY MORE.
