My power antenna quit retracting. It will go up but will not go down on it's own. It isn't bent or otherwise damaged, it just won't go down unless I push it down. I have not had a chance to tear into it. Any thoughts on what it will take to repair?

I had my mast ripped out by a vandal almost 2 years ago, and when I tried to order a replacement mast, I was told the '82-83 model years didn't have a removable mast for the power antenna.

Basically, I used a generic black mast from Pep Boys until I bought a replacement motor. Motorsport Auto has it (Nissan OEM) for $110 (fully automatic) or you could order a Heischmann (spelling?) from the big auto stereo catalog company (I can't remember the name of it) for around $85-90. If you can get a hold of a JC Whitney catalog they may have replacement motors, but it may not fit the holes exactly like the original.

I have seen fully automatic power antennas for as low as $49 at Auto Zone or Pep Boys. I would recommend calling around to a few of them to find the best deal and just replace the one you've got, unless you are trying to keep it all original, then I guess you could tear into the one you have. I pulled mine out, to try to fix it, but it doesn't look to user serviceable.

BOB,

I DON'T THINK AFTERMARKET POWER WILL EITHER MOUNT OR WIRER IN CORRECTLY WITHOUT CUTTING YOUR WIRING HARNESS.
I REPLACED MINE WITH A OEM ONE FROM THE DEALER, I HAVE THE PART NUMBER, THE PART #AS OF 7/97 IS 27960-P9700.
I PAID AROUND A 100.00 FOR IT AT THE DEALER. HOPE THIS HELPS!

Were your vacuum hoses connected correctly?

Thanks! I'm going to tear into it this weekend. I want to keep it original if I can so the part number should come in handy.

When I pulled out my antenna today I found that it was an aftermarket replacement. So... I ran to Autozone and they had the same brand and model as the one I took out for $45. The new one was a little shorter so I had a little trouble getting it back in but not too bad.

Thought you might like to know.
