Hey all I am looking at buying what could be a ZXR, it has no motor, no trans no front fenders or hood, and the only panel on it that could be from a ZXR is the drivers door, which still has the paint scheme, and the rear hatch with the ZXR whale tale spoiler. The guy wants $200 for it and says its rust free. I have acess to a motor and transmission out of a 79 in a local J/Y, as well as fenders and what not, my question is, is there any way to tell, by reading the VIN, if it is or was a real ZXR?? Thanks in advance,

McAdam

Check ZHome.com under "A Buyers Guide To Classic,Collectable & Special Interest Z Cars" . I don't think there was any specific Vin # for these vehicles.Just special paint, wing, decals.Good luck!

The ZXR was a bottom end Datsun that had a spoiler on it, probably faster than most 280zx's due to this. I have a bottom end 280zx and its faster than almost all otehr 280zx'd out there because nothing to drain power from the engine, so that means more horsepower at the wheels, as well as less weight which is also very important. There are few bottom end/zxr datsuns out there, buy it, fix it, it will be decently fast, trust me =)

ZXR Decidedly not "Bottom End"

The ZXR marketing package was a homogolation special to get the wing incorporated fro IMSA competetion. It adds oodles of downforce (300#@100mph?) and the turbo cars had traction problems on throttle in high-speed sweepers. This was the way it was gotten into the system.
No special VIN's, but if the guy had the original Window Sticker that would prove it.
Not really a collectible, as anyone can still make one, so the issue of "original" vs "atersale" doesn't really come into play.
For $200 and a rust-free body, sounds like the beginning of a teriffic project!
