points dizzy converted to electronic, how to go to 80 electronic dizzy now?

our original points dizzy was converted over to electronic using a crane XR 700 kit. i want to change distributors now to a 80 electronic dizzy (with the black box on the side).

my crane conversion kit uses a ballast resistor which obviosly wont be used with the 80 dizz, but unsure where the old wires will go in relation to the new dizzy's terminals when i switch it over. i notice the 80 dizzy has 2 terminals on the back box, and i havnt done any research on what wires would actually go to those 2 terminals.

im curious if my crane conversion is good enough or is the 80 dizzy a better one electronics/performance wise??

thanks

Re: points dizzy converted to electronic, how to go to 80 electr

Brian, since you live in California you probably (?) may have to stick with the ballast resistor due to emmissons. If you don't have E-checks, then you can bypass the resistor and gain more performance that way. The resistor is holding back your spark potential by reducing the voltage. If you were to swap over to the ZX distributor, I don't think there would be any gain, the Crane system is handling the spark now and the ignition modual of the ZX dist. would do the same basically. So, if it were me, I would do away with the resistor and just make sure your current 240 distributor is in good shape and run with that.

according to Cranes website the XR700 conversion kit that was used on my dizzy has to have the resistor in the loop to work properly.

the next step up crane conversion kit XR3000 doesnt require the resistor so i might consider upgrading to that model and getting rid of the resistor. i think that would give me a better ignition system without the dang resistor..

I don't know, I'm still guessing it's to keep guys compliant with CARB and other related emissions. Hey, give it a try and bypass it. IF you smoke it well maybe you shouldn't have removed it. If the car runs a little better, then cool. If memory serves correctly, that system was designed some time ago when the car still had to be E-checked and they needed to have a system that would be compliant. Maybe someone else here can interject their thoughts.

oh, no smog check at all needed on this car in California as its prior to a 1975 model.. I can run anything in it or on it i want with no fear of a check having to be done.

im gonna call Crane this morning and ask them whats up.

Tighten spring more

spring?

Hi Brian510,

I just finished putting a ZX distributor on a '73, I discarded the ballast resistor and used a Pertronix Flamethrower coil. Works great, re-gap your plugs to about forty or forty-five and use some good wires, I'm using Magnecor.

On my car, the distributor mount that fastens to the block worked on the ZX dizzy, I think earlier cars don't have the same type of mount.

The Internet Z Car Club site has a wiring diagram for this conversion.

Continue to use your resistor WITH the recommended Chrysler resistor that is illustrated in the www.zhome.com 70-83 Tech library on Distributor swaps and aftermarket ignitions. Gee.... thought you knew it all ...
Re: points dizzy converted to electronic, how to go to 80 electr

oops thought this was "afm swap running rich" thread... sorry

I did a ZX into 77z distributor swap. Info in tech tips below. Some of it should translate.

Brian, what did you find out from Crane, had you called yet?

Re: points dizzy converted to electronic, how to go to 80 electr

yes, Crane says the XR700 requires the ballast resistor. The XR3000 does not as the voltage is controled from within the box (they both have boxes so why they are different i dont know). probably why one is 20 bucks more than the other. LOL

i may just leave it or i have a older mallory unilite for a datsun i picked up on ebay a few weeks ago i might use with a msd box with rev limiter. friggin decisons again.
electronic distributor swap

Would someone tell me the easy way to swap my duel point dist. to a electronic distributor ? Someone said I need the computer box.And where would i find this computer box?
Re: points dizzy converted to electronic, how to go to 80 electr

the 80 dizzy i just got has the computer module on the side of the dizzy housing. it has 2 prongs on it, one for + coil wire and one for - coil wire. thats it.
