My first thought is: WHO rebuilt the engine? The owner, or a competent shop? If the former, you have a substantial unknown to deal with.
I'd start by checking the oil to see if it looks like a milk shake, and if it's OK, then do a compression test on the engine again, now that the problem has emerged.
The ticking? Check the spark plugs, it wouldn't be the first time a spark plug worked loose or wasn't torqued properly.
