I just bought a 1991 300zx 2+2 NA, the previous owner rebuilt the old engine as it had been sitting for a while. The vehicle was just serviced by a Z specialist in my area for a weird issue of the engine hesitating or stumbling when accelerating which was caused by bad fuel injector. Engine had its compression tested coming back with 175 on all, oil and coolant was also swapped at that time. Over the weekend I took the car out for a drive with some friends and the engine started to overheat, white smoke started to come out of the tail pipes, and the car is making a loud ticking noise on the passenger side of the engine. I'm afraid that I have a blown head gasket, does it sound like that's the issue and if so is it better to replace the head gasket or just engine swap the car?

My first thought is: WHO rebuilt the engine? The owner, or a competent shop? If the former, you have a substantial unknown to deal with.

I'd start by checking the oil to see if it looks like a milk shake, and if it's OK, then do a compression test on the engine again, now that the problem has emerged.

The ticking? Check the spark plugs, it wouldn't be the first time a spark plug worked loose or wasn't torqued properly.

Let us know what you find.
