Hi guys,
I got 71 240z recently and loving it. It has a L28et motor on it. Now ignition key is having problem. Problem is every thing starts fine and runs fine. But when I turn keys off engine dent stop. I don't know what's wrong. I am switching engine off manually by braking and leaving clutch on gear. Please help me. I am a new to Z world.

Please.

Sometimes if you jiggle the key in there that can help shut it off. Go to autozone and get an ignition switch. The key and tumblers. You shouldn't need to replace the electrical component portion. Also maybe a little lube in there to keep it all moving freely.
Uh... if someone did an L28ET upgrade, they may have added a turbo timer? Maybe it had a loose wire or you accidentally set it to run and it hadn't previously? THis will turn off after a while, but you should have a component on your dash that is beeping/flashing/counting down or something. Anything on the dashboard that looks like it is 40 years newer than the car?
WHAT IS THE LONGEST YOU HAVE LET THE ENGINE SIT WITHOUT MANUALLY STOPPING THE ENGINE?

Is the engine still running, or is it "1/2" of the engine? The L28ET has a cooler on one side (well, the 280ZX in general does, which died to give your Z a motor... :)) that runs when the engine is above a certain temperature. This would turn off after a while. (SOUNDS LIKE THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE THE CASE, THOUGHT I'D ADD IT ANYWAY)

Other than that, these old ignitions can, will, and do stick after a while. Have you tried (barring objections from others) spraying a bit from a fresh can of electronic parts cleaner into the key hole of the ignition? Maybe a shot of air after it has dried? Get a suggestion from someone here about what kind of lube to use, I've never done that.

Turbo timer? Wow! One problem the early ones had was eating turbos because owners never let them wind down. The shaft was on lubricated when the engine was running. People would zip into the parking spot and turn it off, the turbo would spin with no lubrication. In 88-89 when I was looking for my replacement, I never came across one turbo that was operational. $1500 at the time to repair. So this is a great addition. We had a procedure on Allison jet engines to idle for 2 min before shut down. That would seem like an eternity sometimes.

Was I wrong?
Over on classiczcar.com you said this -

"I changed the regulator on my 240z, 1971. now suddenly it wont stop even after the key is turned off and removed. mechanic said its problem with the lock, but now reading this i can understand that its not. because even my regulator was changed."

Now you're saying this -

You can't get good help if you can't do a decent job of describing the problem.
Dat, I don't know. I would hope by now there is such a thing. If not, let's invent one.
What alternator do you have? If its not the stock alternator & they have kept the ZX alternator on the L28ET & got rid of the stock alternator & regulator then your ignition could be wired into a closed loop when it was converted. This loop causes the engine to keep running after the ignition switch is shut off as the alternator circuit becomes a closed loop.To fix this problem a diode is place in the circuit so the flow is one way. I have done this fix on my early 240Z when I switched to a ZX alternator. Search for 240Z diode fix.
Maybe he fixed it already. Both of his posts were on the 28th. Same day, two different descriptions. This one was second, maybe he didn't like the responses on the other site. Odd.

PDX - if you're not an attorney, you sure should be one! Nice investigative work!
