Things to check.
Crank Angle Sensor - on the '81turbo it is a device attached right at the crank shaft pulley. It reads a timing mark on the crank and fires plugs accordingly. These are notorious for getting out of adjustment. It can be found by following a cable out of the distributor, down the front of the engine.
These turbo cars are very!! sensitive to timing.
What color smoke did you see when it wouldn't start, then finally did?
You need to check your rotor, cap, etc. for any problems.
Check your voltage to your coil, the usual stuff.
Write back with your findings, especially the color of smoke your car put out.
Black = unburned fuel - very damaging to a turbo.
White billowy = Water - head gasket, etc.
Blue = Oil - head gasket, turbo seals, etc.
One more thing to check are your injectors. You need to make sure they aren't Stuck open. If you put a screwdriver on them, and your ear to the screwdriver, you should hear them clicking. If not, replace.
Good luck. Sorry for the lengthy reply.
