Hey guys...just got my Phantom Air/Fuel gauge from Autometer. I was reading the instructions and the installation is straight forward...my only problem is I don't know exactly where to find the Oxygen Sensor and exactly where I'm supposed to hook up the violet wire on the sensor. Here's the instructions: "Violet Wire: Connect to oxygen sensor signal wire. Connect to vehicle wiring harness, not oxygen sensor since some oxygen sensors use shield wire." my Z is an 83 280zx turbo. I would really appreciate some guidance from you guys who has done this before or know what I'm talking about. Thanks!

Re: Oxygen Sensor, Where is it? I'm hooking up Air

Hi ratedz------------The oxygen sensor should be located on the downpipe, just behind the connection to the manifold. On my '83, there was a sheet metal guard that conceals the sensor. I assume this is some sort of shield to protect the sensor from engine heat. There's only one wire from the sensor to the wiring harness, AIR it's a green wire. I don't think the ZX uses a shielded wire for this connection, at any rate it doesn't look like a special wire. I don't see why you couldn't just hook the violet wire directly to the sensor, since you'll need the input to determine the a/f ratio.

Re: Oxygen Sensor, Where is it? I'm hooking up Air

Cool I know exactly where the 02 sensor is now...so do I connect the violet wire to the green wire and does it matter how close I am to the the sensor itself? The reason I ask is because in the instruction manual it shows the connection away from the sensor...not sure if it makes a difference I just don't want to mess anything up before I cut and splice. thanks Roadman!

Don't splice that wire

You could end up messing something up, I wouldn't wanna take that chance. Go down to radio shack and pick up some crimp on splices. These are great they clamp down around the wire, Make sure to get a crimp connector for your purple wire as well. Then all you need is some pliers to press the crimp down on the green wire, and a wire crimper for the spade connection on your purple wire. IT is a good solid connection and will only take about 1 minute to install.
