Take a wire and run it from the positve battery post to the positive side of the altenator. Then start the car -- if the wires run coool then you have a bad connection somewhere. Probably in the fuse box. Very common. You can resolder the rivits. Also check harness connectors the get corroded. The hot wire top the altenator will buy you some time to find the problem. Mine was the fuse block.
