Has anyone taken off their muffler but retained the pre-silencer? How does it sound and did it give you any performance gains?

No performance gain, crappy sound. you may be able to make it work if you put a piece of pipe after the silencer about 6 inches because that would smooth out the flow.

I was planning on running a pipe to a nice chrome tip, has anyone done this?

3inch straight pipe...

I just installed 3inch straight pipe and I'm pretty happy with it... it's really loud but it's the way I like it... what the heck is a pre silencer? do you mean a catalitic converter? and you don't say what you want to put it on... we need to know what engine you have.. turbo's really quite the exhaust down so straight is really not a good idea on a non-turbo...
