Well....I have decided to do the 280Z to VR Spyder conversion....but I was wondering if mazda miata seats would fit into a 78 Z....I do this for two reason....I like comfy seats...and you can get seats with speakers in them...solving the ever present problem of speaker placement..so, what's it gonna be... miata seats or custom seats.

Yeah, but were would you go to buy Miata seats? What's the cost of them? I've often thought of doing this. My ex-girlfriend has a Miata and they looked awfully similar in fit to the Z seats....

You can get the seats from a junkyard. There was a write-up on this in the 240Z list earlier this year.

What kind of junkyard. The only ones I know of around here (San Bernardino area, CA) are the pick your own part type places and there is no way in **** a miata would be there. Do I need to look for specialty junkyards?

You can use almost any type of car seat--as long as you build the box(according to my Z specialist) --Custom bracket/rails.

I was looking at used Recaros and even some awesome Mazda rx-7 seats---but they wanted $900 for the pair! So it would have been cheaper for new aftermarket seats.

One can get aftermarket seats from Corbeau--about $300 a piece.

www.recaro.com
www.jamex.com

Obviously not every junkyard has Miata's there.

Here in the SEattle area--there is a place called Fitz Auto parts that dismantles and put all the different seats in a showroom! They have a lot of rebuildable wrecks for sale too.

Unless one can get the seats at a ridiculously low price--definitely consider the cost.

I ended up reupholstering the seats in my 260.

You think Miatas never crash? It happens ( I've seen it with my own eyes. ) It's hard, but it does happen. As long as half the population drives glorified tractors on the Interstates, there will be wrecked Miatas. :^)

Yeah, but the self service yards around here never seem to have anyting interesting past 1983 or 85. About the only thing after that you could find are mabye old corollas or sentras or disposable cars. I've never even seen a 300ZX there and that's an old car. My impression is that if it can make money, it bypasses these common yards and goes someplace else. My question is, where is that somplace else. I have no doubt that Miatas crash as all cars do. Just want to know where to look for them.

Try looking for Pontiac Fieros, they had speakers in the headrests, and there's lots of them out there.
