Everytime I turn on my gauge lights, I smell something burning, so I checked it out and my wires from the variable resistor were completely burnt up. So, I bypassed the resistor and the wires still get way too hot. Also, my combination switch doesn't turn on my tail lights, so I soldered the wire for the tailights to the headlight part of the switch. Could this be causing the problem, or something else? Thanks

The 8 body lights (plus dash lights) that come on with the parking lights pull about the same amount of power as the headlights themselves. So now you have a circuit that is 200% overloaded ... I'm sure that the switch connections are very hot as well as the wires and connectors past that switch. Replace your combination switch instead of the hack you have now.
