I have a '71 240 with an F54 block. The car runs great, but I want to upgrade the alternator. I've read on zcarcreations.com that you can use the '85 Maxima alternator. I know about the external regulator that's on the 240z, but I was wondering if anyone has used this. This is a 70 amp alternator and the amperage would be a significant improvement.

What about the pulley? Does it bolt up correctly?

Any info would be helpful

I checked into this mod a few months ago. The Maxima alternator is actually more than 70 amps (85 I believe).

The only problem with this modification is the pulley. Your old 240Z pulley won't bolt up. You'll have to hunt around for the correct pulley. I couldn't find it and gave up.

If 70 amps is ok, go with a 84 300ZX NA alternator. It's a direct bolt up (its what I have) It's internally regulated so there's some minor re-wiring required (check zhome.com for tech article).
