On my Datsun 280zx (1979) It is set at manufacture date as Sept. 78. However the ones that were shipped to the US were not made until Nov. 78...how is this?

What does this tell me?
8/78 production started .
Okay that is much simpler than that website was.
Okay so when EXACTLY did the Datsun 280zx start to say "By Nissan" under Datsun 280zx on the hatch? Mine is a sept/78 Datsun 280zx and does not say "By Nissan."
Some early 79ZX's may not have the Nissan lable under Datsun, My 79 does have it. I have 79 dealer brochure shows the cars with Nissan under Datsun. Mine was made in 4/79.

capcadetseipel, is your 79 a GL or standard model? Also, is it a federal model(49 states) or California spec(50 state). The federal model did not have a cat and 135hp vs. 132hp and a cat on 50 state California model. I wonder if the federal models did not have Nissan?
Um...I do not think that it is a Cali model because there is NO EPA crap on it...except the fuel vapor return thinga mijigger. I agree though, Mine is a VERY early model so they might not have started it that early.
You can tell by the HP rating on the firewall sn. plate behind the battery, 132hp = 50 state, 135 =49 . Also the sticker under the hood states it has a catalist, but stickers on he hood may be long gone, like much of the pollution stuff on my car. I like my 79 a lot, bought it from a friend in 83 with 10k on it.
I have not been able to drive it yet i found it "Outstanding in a field" and have rescued it. It runs just have to order a new brake and clutch master cylinder. It was almost gone when I found it.
Post a few pictures of the car , the rear hatch emblem, the manufacture date tag etc. Maybe you don't have a 79 zx.
Here is the plate inside the drivers door and the emblem on the hatch.

yup thats an early 79 zx.
Why does it not say by Nissan? It is also missing the side 280zx emblems
Early 79 280ZX's just said Datsun. You can find Nissan all over the car, look at the valve cover. If you don't like the Datsun emblem I'll trade you for one that has Nissan under it. If you don't have side emblems someone took them off and did not put them back on.

I think you can still get them new, at least not that long ago. I found the answer cars made in 7-78 and 8-78 have a different part number for the rear than the ones made from september on, check it out and don't go by the drawing. http://nissan4u.com/parts/280zx/us_...us/emblem_name_label_caution_plate_and_label/

Use this site with you 8-78 when you need to see parts are interchangeble between the years. http://nissan4u.com/parts/280zx/us_s130
So is it slightly different from the rest of the 79s? or just on paper?
Arrrg, just the rear emblem. There is nothing special about your 79 280ZX, just a early production month of a first model year run. I mean its special cause its a Zcar. Use the second link I gave in my last post, see the dates parts are used in manufacturingof the 280ZX
Okay thank you
I just saw your age, cool car for someone at your age. It wil get under your skin and in your blood, but remember it is 31 year old car. Just get it running and enjoy it for what it is. In fall of 1978 when the 280ZX came out it was a dream car(well not to the s30 fans), fast in its day and awsome.

By the way, the 1979 280ZX was the most sold Z-car, at least in America ever. A GL model was Corvette priced(not cheap). Unique to the 79 is a 130MPH speedo and if you have the GL package, the one touch drivers window up/down feature that was way ahead of it's day.

Only GL's have power windows, steering, maybe mirrors, rear wiper, cloth seats, cruise and Iron cross wheels. You could not order this stuff by its self, only as a package.
