I’m getting ready to install the manifold and checking the gasket. this may be a silly question but does the flat side go against the engine or the manifold?

I hope that gasket is flat on both sides.... ;)

Seriously, I thought the bolt hole pattern was the guide...

yes, there’s one in every crowd. The gasket can be flipped around. the pattern is symmetrical. The gasket is metal sandwiched with gasket material. One side is flat all around the other side is thicker material with rounded edges.

Just an opinion, but if the metal came rolled thru the opening to one side when the gasket/metal was punched, I'd go with the rolled-thru metal to the manifold side. If metal is not rolled thru then I'd go with the thicker side against the manifold to allow more "crush" against the manifold flange: the engine openings machined better/flatter.
